About Northern Pygmy Owls (Glaucidium gnoma):  The Northern pygmy owl is an owl found in Western North America.  It is up to 7 inches (18 cm) tall, with a 15 inch (38 cm) wingspan.  It has yellow eyes, and a small round head with no ear tufts.  Pygmy owls eat a wide range of small mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians, and these fierce little hunters can take prey up to 3 times their weight.  They cache surplus prey in a tree cavity to eat later, particularly in the winter.  They are most active at dawn and dusk.
